New accents for the guest bedroom: help me choose

Don't freak out, but I'm pulling a lot of color into our guest bedroom decor, and I'd love your comments about which rug and lamps I should use. With white walls, white linen bedding, and wood floors, I've decided to explore a new and bold color way. Orange and teal blue. Today I fell in love with Scandi Vintage's  Swedish curtain panels on Etsy, and now they are on their way to me from lovely Sweden.

If you know me well or have followed my blog for a while, you know that choosing complementary colors, like orange and blue, for my home is extremely rare.  I think having a professional stylist at my previous home in Charlotte for the Better Homes & Gardens' photo shoot opened my design mind to more colors and patterns. Plus, with friends like Krista of Cloth & Kind, and Tami of Tami Ramsay Design how can I not be inspired? Now I really appreciate the colorful textiles I have from India and southeast Asia. Next week, I'll share the vintage ikat bedspreads from Indonesia my mother-in-law gave me last December. I love them, and I'm saving them for our master bedroom. Krista and Tami will swoon over them!

Now I need your kind opinions on which rug and lamp combination I should use in my guest bedroom along with my new orange flower drapes. Do you like option 1 {with brass lamps}, 2 {whitewashed lamps} or 3 below {silver and glass lamps}?

  1. Thanks for the shoutout, Chanee! I vote for #1 with the brass accents, for sure. I love the orange and teal combo! Please share picts of your new ikat bedspreads when they arrive too - they sound like they will be right up my alley! I wish I could come see your new place in Philly. Everything you are doing to it looks just lovely. xoxo

  2. First off--thanks for including me in the company of you 2 wonderful and creative gals! I have to agree with Krista. I cannot get enough brass these days, especially paired with those luscious hues (Where did those drapes come from??!!). I must admit though that I am really drawn more to the pattern in the rug in option 3 paired with the brass lamps. Can't wait to see how all of this unfolds. And as for the ikat bedspread, expecting hi-res images of that one in my inbox!

  3. Without considering function #3 appeals to me aesthetically because the look is cleaner and I love curved repetition, but I hate to be in bed without a good reading light! That brings me to #1. I lived through the brass years so it reminds me of aging, but I recognize it is on the rise again. In all seriousness #1 is a great look.

  4. Mmmm...that's really tough. I really love option #1 but I also love those pendants in option 3 as well. I really love your drapes and with the white linens those are going to look beautiful.

  6. Update! Thank you all for your wonderfully helpful opinions. I still haven't decided 100% but I did pull the trigger on the globe pendant lamps from West Elm {since they are on sale & back order}, and the 4x6 rug - option 3- from anthro {also on sale}. If the rug doesn't work well with the curtains, I'll choose another one.
The good news is I can always mix and match these options and potentially use them in our 2nd guest bedroom. Both spaces lack overhead lights so I need to get creative with lighting. Once I get everything set up I'll be sure share an "after" post.

  7. Hands down: Number 2. I'm done with brass. My apartment (when I was 21) was decorated in melon, teal, and camel. I still love those colors together. White was the best accent color I found to make those look fresh.

  8. Hi Chanee, I'd go for option 2) for a traditional yet soft, fresh look or option 3) for a more contemporary one. These two will not compete with the colours or design of the panels & rug (such as the additional colour of the brass). While I think the patterns of rugs (2 & 3) works well with the panels, the intense blue/teal might compete too much with the orange, which can be a little tiring after a while. I'd personally go for a paler, ligher blue, which would compliement the strong orange better. If you normally don't go for a complimentary scheme, an idea is to introduce the blue as accents rather than in a large rug; cushions, vases etc. Whatever you chose, as long as it feels right for you! I also have to say that I really admire you product, love your understated, but soo stylish designs!
