our poconos lake cottage

Happy Friday! I know it's been a very long time since my last blog post. The main reason? I've been super busy making beautiful pillows for my wonderful clients. I've also been renovating our historic row house {well...not me, but highly talented contractors}. The final reason I've been holding back blog posts is because I'm waiting for the Better Homes and Gardens magazine feature of our home in Charlotte to be published - it was a year ago this month they did the photoshoot. I stopped sharing renovation photos of our Philly house because once again there are plans for a photoshoot and magazine feature. I do plan to share many progress photos in the coming weeks of our row house renovation {if you follow me on Instagram, you've probably already seen the pics}.

After living in Philadelphia for one year, a few weeks ago we loaded up the dogs and drove two hours from center city to the Pocono Mountains..."The Poconos" to spend our first night at our new lake side cottage. Just as I finished our complex kitchen and master suite renovations at our historic row house, I find myself invigorated with the idea of simple DIY projects at our 1980s lake house.

For now, let me introduce you to our lake house!

It was built in the 80s with a fabulous open floor plan. The first level has a large entryway, half bath, coat and laundry closet, eat-in kitchen, dining room and living room - a great room. The back of the house is all windows with views of the mature birch, cherry and spruce trees, and of course, the lake. The spiral staircase leads to the second floor with two small guest bedrooms, a full guest bath with a vaulted ceiling and skylight, and the master suite. The master bedroom is huge with a vaulted ceiling and the same wall of windows the living space below enjoys. The kitchen and entryway have pegwood floors, bathrooms have white tile, and the rest of the house has Berber carpet. The one downside to this house? It's very 1980s in its style and decor. The house came furnished, so I am living with what we have for the most part.  I plan to slowly introduce a more functional 'modern cabin' aesthetic to our home. I've already updated the entryway with cedar trim, paint and lots of hooks {a before and after post coming soon}! I've painted the spiral staircase black from white. Actually, the whole house is light beige with white trim, so there will be many rooms to paint. Here's a photo of the back of the house at dusk.

Better Homes & Gardens Feature

Two of my pillow covers were featured in the November 2012 issue of Better Homes & Gardens in a festive piece titled, "Golden Age" by the talented Amy Panos. The piece was photographed by Cameron Sadeghpour, and styled by Stephen Perfetto {love his last name!}

I finally got my hands on a copy of the issue and I'm so thrilled. You can spot my two pillow cover designs on pages 43 and 45.

We already have two pillow cover winners!

We already have two pillow cover winners! Sara from Okanagan, Canada, and Rochelle from Chicago, IL spotted my Karnataka pillow cover in the November issue of Better Homes & Gardens. Congrats, ladies! They win the pillow cover of their choice from my shop

Here's the photo Rochelle shared on the {me}longings studio Facebook page. The magazine's sourcing details call it the "Aya" design, but it's actually the Karnataka design. Oh well! It still looks great to me.

A Pillow in Better Homes & Gardens

I'm pretty excited to have one of my pillow covers featured in the November issue of Better Homes & Gardens. I'm not sure which pillow cover they used in their "Metallics" feature, but I can't wait to see how they styled and photographed it.

To celebrate having one of my pillows in Better Homes & Gardens, I'm giving away a pillow cover to the first two people who spot my pillow in the magazine, take a photo of it, and share the photo on Twitter, Pinterest and/orFacebook. The first two people will win the pillow cover of their choice from {me}longings studio shop.

Please mention @melongings on Twitter and Pinterest, and/or post your photo on the {me}longings studioFacebook page: https://www.facebook.com/melongings

Good luck!

Progress in the studio

My studio on the fourth floor is coming along nicely so I'd thought I'd share some progress photos. Last week the super duper carpenters finished my printing table, and this week my large stainless steel utility sink arrived.

We removed the kitchenette from the 90s that had a small sink, refrigerator and cabinets to make way for my new 36" rinse sink. The sink and the hand held sprayer are not installed yet, but I think it looks fantastic next to the cedar wood shelves Elbert {the creative carpenter} built today. He used wood we found in the basement left over from the roof deck. I love the grey patina of the cedar against the bright white walls. These shelves give me a secure spot to store my inks. We plan to use the same cedar boards for a counter top next to the sink -  giving me even more surface area for my tools and supplies after rinsing. This is all good news!

The only bad news? The 25 year old A/C completely shut down yesterday. It's nearly as expensive to fix as it is to replace. So I'll be without A/C in the studio for at least two weeks. Such a bummer!
I hope you have wonderfully relaxing and productive weekend!

New accents for the guest bedroom: help me choose

Don't freak out, but I'm pulling a lot of color into our guest bedroom decor, and I'd love your comments about which rug and lamps I should use. With white walls, white linen bedding, and wood floors, I've decided to explore a new and bold color way. Orange and teal blue. Today I fell in love with Scandi Vintage's  Swedish curtain panels on Etsy, and now they are on their way to me from lovely Sweden.

If you know me well or have followed my blog for a while, you know that choosing complementary colors, like orange and blue, for my home is extremely rare.  I think having a professional stylist at my previous home in Charlotte for the Better Homes & Gardens' photo shoot opened my design mind to more colors and patterns. Plus, with friends like Krista of Cloth & Kind, and Tami of Tami Ramsay Design how can I not be inspired? Now I really appreciate the colorful textiles I have from India and southeast Asia. Next week, I'll share the vintage ikat bedspreads from Indonesia my mother-in-law gave me last December. I love them, and I'm saving them for our master bedroom. Krista and Tami will swoon over them!

Now I need your kind opinions on which rug and lamp combination I should use in my guest bedroom along with my new orange flower drapes. Do you like option 1 {with brass lamps}, 2 {whitewashed lamps} or 3 below {silver and glass lamps}?

Above: Option 1. Jute Rug from West ElmOverdye Andover Teal Rug, My Vintage Brass Scissor lamp, Cylinder Gold Table Lamp from Gallivanting Girls

Above: Option 2. West Elm Jute RugClaude Modena Overdyed Aqua Rug, Antropologie table lamp, West Elm Floor Lamp

Above: Option 3. West Elm Jute Rug, Anthropologie Zigzags Rug, West Elm Pendant lights, West Elm mercury glass table lamp.
